A new genus of Neotropical rheophilic catfishes, with four new species (Teleostei: Siluriformes: Pseudopimelodidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Shibatta,Oscar Akio; Vari,Richard P..
ABSTRACT Rhyacoglanis, a new genus of the South American freshwater catfish family Pseudopimelodidae is described from cis-Andean portions of the continent. Rhyacoglanis is distinguished from other genera of the family by three synapomorphies: presence of a light blotch on the cheek; a connection between the middle of the dark caudal-fin stripe and the dark caudal-peduncle pigmentation; and 30-35 total vertebrae. Species of Rhyacoglanis are rheophilic and strongly associated with rapids and other swift-flowing waters. A phylogenetic analysis based on 41 morphological characters yields a hypothesis of monophyly of the Pseudopimelodidae and Rhyacoglanis. Pimelodus pulcher Boulenger, 1887, from the western Amazon basin is designated as type-species of the new...

Alimentação em machos e fêmeas do pirá-brasília, Simpsonichthys boitonei Carvalho (Cyprinodontiformes, Rivulidae) Zoologia
Shibatta,Oscar Akio; Rocha,Antônio José Andrade.
Simpsonichthys boitonei Carvalho, 1959 has an evident sexual dimorphism, easily observed in the color pattern and body proportions. In order to know the differences in the diet between males and females, the stomach contents of 28 individuals was examined. The Sorensen's index of similarity showed 90.9% of food items in common between sex. The main food in this species is Cladocera as evidenced in terms of average number, abundance and frequency of occurrence. The presence of vegetable is evidence of a high flexibility of this species in relation to the feeding behavior. Maybe the differences in the social behavior between sex are important in the total amount of ingested food.

Astyanax aff. fasciatus Cuvier, 1819 (Teleostei; Characidae): evidences of a species complex in the upper rio Tibagi basin (Paraná, Brazil) Neotropical Ichthyology
Artoni,Roberto Ferreira; Shibatta,Oscar Akio; Gross,Maria Claudia; Schneider,Carlos Henrique; Almeida,Mara Cristina de; Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo; Bertollo,Luiz Antonio Carlos.
Four populations of Astyanax aff. fasciatus of the upper rio Tibagi (municipal district of Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil), had their karyotypes and morphometry analyzed. The cytogenetic data show the occurrence of distinct karyotypes (cytotypes), here named cytotype A, with 2n=48 chromosomes (6m+18sm+14st+10a), cytotype B, with 2n=50 chromosomes (8m+18sm+14st+10a) and cytotype C, with 2n=50 chromosomes (8m+18sm+14st+10a). The distribution pattern of the constitutive heterochromatin was very similar between cytotypes A and B, but diverged in relation to cytotype C. Distinct cytotypes may occur in sympatry in the upper rio Tibagi region, with the exception of the Furna 2 sample, which presents cytotype A exclusively. In addition, a specimen with 2n=49...

Crescimento de Schizodon Intermedius Garavello & Britski (Ostheichthyes, Anostomidae) do Rio Tibagi (Sertanópolis, Paraná) Zoologia
Orsi,Mário Luís; Shibatta,Oscar Akio.
This work consists of age, growth, and circuli formation period determination and the relation of reproduction, temperature, and pluviosity on the growth of S. intermedius Garavello & Britski, 1990. The growth curve was adjusted by the Bertalanfy's expression and the relationship between weight and size was made by the minimum square method to determine the conditioning factor. Gonadossomatic index (IGS) was used to study the reproduction. The assintotic values for length were 33,94 cm and 44,81 cm for males and females, respectively. The circulus were formed annually and the growth was slow and the maximum age was determined to be nine years. The formation of the circuli was influenced by the reproduction, probably allied to other abiotic factors...

Cryptic species of the genus Pimelodella (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae) from the Miranda River, Paraguay River basin, Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul, Central Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Souza-Shibatta,Lenice; Pezenti,Larissa Forim; Ferreira,Dhiego Gomes; Almeida,Fernanda Simões de; Sofia,Silvia Helena; Shibatta,Oscar Akio.
Specimens of Pimelodellacaptured in the Miranda River, Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul State, present morphological features that could indicate at least four species. Therefore, karyotype analysis and molecular biology provided evidence that they were only two species, one showing 2n = 46, and the other, 2n = 52 chromosomes, with only 18% genetic similarity. The morphological analysis evidenced that the dorsal filament is a male characteristic and that the upper lobe of the caudal fin was variable and might or might not be elongated in both species. With respect to morphometric characters, the formation of two groups was evident, but with a small overlap of specimens between them. Among the species with filaments on the dorsal fin observed in the Pantanal,...

Development and characterization of microsatellite loci of Microglanis cottoides (Siluriformes: Pseudopimelodidae) and cross-species amplification Neotropical Ichthyology
Souza-Shibatta,Lenice; Ferreira,Dhiego Gomes; Oliveira,Claudio; Almeida,Fernanda Simões de; Shibatta,Oscar Akio; Sofia,Silvia Helena.
Thirteen microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized in Microglanis cottoides. Of these, two were monomorphic and 11 were polymorphic. These polymorphic loci tested on 24 individuals from a wild population produced a total of 108 different alleles, with levels of variability high, ranging from 2 to 20, with an average of 8.3 alleles per locus. The observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.125 to 0.958 and from 0.119 to 0.931, respectively. A high combined probability of paternity exclusion value and a low probability combined genetic identity value obtained show that the set of loci described herein displays good suitability for paternity studies and differentiation of M. cottoides. Additionally, all thirteen microsatellite primers...

Diversidade da ictiofauna do Alto Rio Paraná: composição atual e perspectivas futuras Biota Neotropica
Langeani,Francisco; Castro,Ricardo Macedo Corrêa e; Oyakawa,Osvaldo Takeshi; Shibatta,Oscar Akio; Pavanelli,Carla Simone; Casatti,Lilian.

DNA barcoding confirms the occurrence of Rhamdia branneri and Rhamdia voulezi (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae) in the Iguaçu River Basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Ribolli,Josiane; Scaranto,Bianca Maria; Shibatta,Oscar Akio; Bombardelli,Robie Allan; Zaniboni-Filho,Evoy.
ABSTRACT DNA barcoding is a widely utilized molecular-based identification of species and taxonomic resolutions. Until recently, Rhamdia voulezi and Rhamdia branneri were considered species synonyms of Rhamdia quelen; however, morphological and cytogenetic analyses have suggested the validity of distinct species. Due to the absence of molecular taxonomy of R. voulezi and R. branneri, the objective of this study was to test its validity through traditional DNA barcoding and the GMYC (General Mixed Yule Coalescent) COI-based analyses in 19 specimens from the Iguaçu River Basin. In both methodologies, three MOTUs (Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units) were identified based on the estimated optimum threshold (OT = 0.77). The average inter-MOTU distance (NJ,...

Gross brain morphology of Rhamdia quelen (Quoy & Gaimard 1824) (Ostariophysi: Siluriformes: Heptapteridae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Abrahão,Vitor Pimenta; Pupo,Fábio Müller dos Reis de Salles; Shibatta,Oscar Akio.
Abstract The brain gross morphology of Rhamdia quelen is described and compared with seven species of six genera of Heptapteridae. Interspecific variation in shape, size, and position of brain subdivisions was observed in all examined species. The posterior position of the hypophysis on the hypothalamus and presence of a lateral subdivision on the lobus facialis are shared by all examined heptapterids. Rhamdia quelen and Pimelodella gracilis, currently considered closely related within the family Heptapteridae, exhibit the anterior and posterior area of the telencephalon with equivalent widths, and the lateral line lobe reaching the anterior area of the lobus vagi. Members of the so called Nemuroglanis sub-clade (Cetopsorhamdia iheringi, Heptapterus...

Gross morphology of the brain of Pseudopimelodus bufonius (Valenciennes, 1840) (Siluriformes: Pseudopimelodidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Abrahão,Vitor Pimenta; Shibatta,Oscar Akio.
The gross morphology of the brain of the pseudopimelodid Pseudopimelodus bufonius is described and compared with congeners. Observations were made on removed brains after elimination of bones from the top of the skull and severing of the cranial nerves and the spinal cord. Nine morphometric characters associated with the major subdivisions of the brain were identified, seven of which revealed significant differences among the species examined. The corpus cerebelli in all examined species of the genus is the largest structure of the brain. The behavior of the species of Pseudopimelodus is still unknown, but in other teleosts that condition is typically correlated with a higher degree of motor coordination. Relative size proportions of the tectum opticum,...

Plasticidade alimentar em Rivulus pictus Costa (Osteichthtyes, Cyprinodontiformes, Rivulidae) de uma pequena lagoa em Brasília, Distrito Federal, Brasil Zoologia
Shibatta,Oscar Akio; Bennemann,Sirlei Terezinha.
Rivulus pictus has a wide distribution in Distrito Federal and lives in different environments, including small lakes. The analysis of gastric and intestinal contents showed that most of the 21 ingested food items were from autochthonous origin and characterized the diet of an omnivorous fish with a trend to planktivory. Five feeding items were important in the composition of the alimentary spectrum and revealed that food resources are explored near water surface (Acari), in the water column (Copepoda, Cladocera and Closterium sp.) and also in the bottom (Chironomidae). The varied diet and the capacity to explore all levels of the environment evidenced that feeding flexibility is one of the factors that facilitates the survival of this species in different...
